Paid in USD, spending in local currency? Withdrawal fees and FX spread compared
What you lose turning USD freelance income into rupiah or another currency, with Wise, Payoneer, PayPal, wire and Upwork fees checked in October 2026.

When clients pay you in US dollars and you spend rupiah or another currency, you pay twice: a visible withdrawal or transfer fee, and the exchange rate spread, which is the gap between the mid-market rate and the rate you actually get. The spread rarely appears as a line item, so the only reliable way to see it is to compare the local amount that reached your bank with what your dollars were worth at the mid-market rate that day. On the providers' own pages in October 2026, the published cost of converting dollars to rupiah was about 0.4% at Wise, 3% at PayPal, and 1.2% to 4% for a Payoneer bank withdrawal.
The examples use the Indonesian rupiah and hypothetical amounts and rates, but the method works for any currency. All fees were checked on the providers' own pages on 20 October 2026. They change often and many depend on your country and account, so confirm them before you choose.
We make Mindset, a time and money tracker for freelancers mentioned near the end, so read that part with this in mind.
Mid-market rate and the rate you get
The mid-market rate is the midpoint between what buyers and sellers pay for a currency on the wholesale market. It is the rate you see when you search "USD to IDR". Upwork's own help page describes it as the rate between banks, without fees or markups, and notes that it is not usually what you get when money actually changes currency (How currency conversion works on Upwork).
Providers charge for conversion in two ways:
- A visible fee on top of the mid-market rate. Wise works this way and shows the fee before you confirm.
- A markup built into the exchange rate. Upwork says its payment partners set the rate and may include a markup. PayPal publishes its markup as a percentage above its base exchange rate. Payoneer says its rates are based on wholesale market rates and include the conversion fee.
A markup in the rate is still a fee. You just can't see it on the receipt.
How to measure the spread on your own withdrawals
You need three numbers for each withdrawal:
- The US dollar amount that left your platform balance, and the date and time.
- The local amount that arrived in your bank.
- The mid-market rate at about the time of the conversion.
For the mid-market rate, use a currency converter such as Google's or Wise's. For the rupiah, Bank Indonesia also publishes JISDOR, a USD/IDR reference rate based on interbank spot trades, on each working day. Rates move during the day, so treat differences of a few tenths of a percent as noise.
Then:
value at mid-market = USD withdrawn x mid-market rate
total cost = value at mid-market - local amount received
cost in percent = total cost / value at mid-market x 100
A hypothetical example. You withdraw $1,000 from Upwork with Direct to Local Bank in rupiah. The mid-market rate that day is Rp18,000 per dollar, and Rp17,800,000 arrives.
value at mid-market $1,000 x Rp18,000 = Rp18,000,000
received = Rp17,800,000
total cost = Rp200,000 (about $11.11, 1.11%)
visible fee $0.99 = Rp17,820
spread and other deductions = Rp182,180 (about $10.12)
rate you actually got = Rp17,800 per dollar
The total cost includes everything: the platform fee, the conversion markup, and any fee your own bank charged on the incoming payment. That is what you want, because all of it is money the work earned and you didn't receive. Measure three or four withdrawals per method before you compare methods.
Your options, compared
Here are the published costs for turning $1,000 of Upwork earnings into rupiah in an Indonesian bank account. Upwork's per-transfer fees for PayPal and Payoneer are shown in your Upwork withdrawal settings rather than on its help pages, so they appear here as "Upwork fee".
| Route | Fees published by the providers | Conversion | Published cost on $1,000 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Upwork Direct to Local Bank | $0.99 per withdrawal; incoming fees at some banks | Payment partner's rate, may include a markup | $0.99 plus a markup you have to measure |
| Upwork to Payoneer, then to your bank | Upwork fee; Payoneer bank withdrawal 1.2% to 4% | Payoneer's rate, based on wholesale rates and including its fee | $12 to $40 plus the Upwork fee |
| Upwork to PayPal, then to your bank | Upwork fee; rupiah withdrawal free above Rp1,500,000, otherwise Rp16,000 | 3.0% above PayPal's base rate | About $30 plus the Upwork fee |
| Upwork US dollar wire to a USD account at your bank | $50 per wire; intermediary and incoming bank fees | None while you keep USD; your bank's rate when you convert | $50 plus bank fees |
| Wise, where you can hold a balance | Receiving USD by ACH free; USD wire or Swift $6.11 | Mid-market rate plus a fee of about 0.4% for USD to IDR | About $4, plus $6.11 for a wire |
On $2,000 a month, the difference between a route that costs 0.4% and one that costs 3% is $52 a month, or $624 a year.
Upwork Direct to Local Bank
Upwork charges $0.99 per Direct to Local Bank withdrawal, plus incoming fees at some banks, and says sending in your local currency may reduce or remove those bank fees (Direct to Local Bank fees and limits). Money should arrive within four business days. In Indonesia the minimum withdrawal is $5 and the limit is $10,000. Upwork doesn't publish the markup in its partner's rate, so this is the route where measuring matters most. Our guide to Upwork fees and Connects covers the other Upwork methods.
Payoneer
Upwork offers Payoneer outside the US and India, charges a small per-transfer fee, and says Payoneer may add its own fees (Payoneer on Upwork). Payoneer's pricing page, last updated 1 January 2026, lists:
- Receiving from marketplaces: varies by marketplace.
- Receiving from a direct client into a receiving account in a currency that isn't your local currency, such as USD for an Indonesian freelancer: 1%, minimum $1.
- Withdrawing to a bank account: a fixed fee for same-country, local-currency withdrawals in a list of supported countries (Indonesia isn't on it), and otherwise 1.2% to 4%, with minimum fees in some countries.
- Moving money between your own Payoneer balances: 0.50%.
- An annual account fee of $29.95 if the account receives less than $6,000 in any 12 consecutive months.
Payoneer says these are its most common fees and that your exact fees are in the Fees section of your account. Check there, because the range from 1.2% to 4% is wide.
PayPal
PayPal's Indonesia fee pages, updated 28 September 2026, list a 3.0% fee above the base exchange rate when you convert a balance or transfer it to your bank in another currency, on both personal and business accounts. A rupiah withdrawal to a local bank is free above Rp1,500,000 and costs Rp16,000 below that. Upwork charges its own fee to send to PayPal, shown in your withdrawal settings (PayPal on Upwork). The 3.0% is per conversion, so converting a balance more than once costs more.
Direct bank wire
Upwork charges $50 per US dollar wire. If your account isn't in US dollars, your bank sets the exchange rate and may charge a spread or exchange fee as well as its incoming wire fee. Intermediary or correspondent banks can deduct their own fees along the way (wire transfers on Upwork). The fixed $50 makes wires expensive for small amounts. Their advantage is that a USD account at your bank lets you keep dollars and decide when to convert. Ask your bank for its incoming wire fee and its USD/IDR rate before you choose this route.
Wise
In most countries where Wise lets you hold money, it also gives you USD account details, though some countries are excluded. Receiving US dollars by domestic transfer, such as ACH, is free, and USD wire and Swift payments cost $6.11 each (Wise receiving fees). Conversions use the mid-market rate with a separate fee. On 20 October 2026, Wise's price calculator showed about 0.4% to convert $1,000 from a USD balance to an Indonesian bank account.
For Indonesian residents there is a catch. Indonesia was not on Wise's list of countries where you can hold money, and Wise's Indonesian availability page listed only sending money abroad. Without a balance there are no USD account details, so you can't receive dollars into Wise from Indonesia. A direct client abroad can still use Wise to send money straight to your rupiah account, in which case the client pays Wise's fee.
If you live where Wise offers USD account details and your direct clients can pay by US bank transfer, Wise had the lowest published costs in this comparison. For Upwork earnings, check whether Upwork accepts your Wise USD details as a Direct to U.S. Bank method; since 1 September 2026 that method costs $2.99 per withdrawal for freelancers with a tax address outside the US (Direct to U.S. Bank).
Other currencies
Everything above applies to any currency pair. What changes is availability and price:
- Upwork's Direct to Local Bank list covers many currencies, each with its own minimums and limits.
- PayPal's conversion fee and withdrawal fees differ by country, so use your own country's PayPal fee page.
- Payoneer's local bank withdrawal options differ by country.
- Wise accounts, USD details and conversion fees depend on where you live and the currencies involved.
Run the same measurement on your own withdrawals. The published numbers tell you where to start; the amount that reaches your bank tells you what you actually pay.
Count the gap as a cost
The money lost between your platform balance and your bank is a cost of the work, like Connects or software. Leave it out and your hourly rate looks higher than it is. Our guide to calculating your real hourly rate shows where it fits in the formula.
Mindset, our Pomodoro timer with time and money tracking for freelance software engineers, handles this through withdrawals. You record amounts in US dollars and your local currency, and each withdrawal records what actually reached your bank. The difference between the dollars withdrawn and the local amount received, fees and spread together, counts as a cost in your hourly rates. Mindset is coming to the App Store for Mac and iPhone and is not released yet.

FAQ
Is Wise or Payoneer cheaper for receiving USD?
Where Wise accounts are available, Wise's published costs are lower: free to receive USD by domestic transfer and about 0.4% to convert USD to rupiah in October 2026, against Payoneer's 1% for receiving into a foreign-currency account and 1.2% to 4% for most bank withdrawals. Payoneer, on the other hand, is available in some countries where Wise doesn't offer balances, such as Indonesia, and Upwork pays out to it directly. Compare what actually reaches your bank for your own country and amounts.
What is the mid-market rate?
It is the midpoint between the buy and sell prices of a currency on the wholesale market, the rate shown by Google or XE. Providers either charge a fee on top of it or give you a worse rate and keep the difference. The second kind of fee is the spread.
Can I receive USD with Wise in Indonesia?
Not when we checked in October 2026. Indonesia wasn't on Wise's list of countries where residents can hold money, and Wise's Indonesian site listed only sending money abroad. Check Wise's availability page for changes.
Why did I receive less than the Google exchange rate?
Because the provider applied its own rate, which includes a markup, and possibly your bank charged an incoming fee. Multiply the dollars you withdrew by the mid-market rate at that time and subtract what arrived to see the total cost.
Does Upwork charge for currency conversion?
Upwork charges a fixed fee per withdrawal, such as $0.99 for Direct to Local Bank. The conversion itself is handled by its payment partners, who set the rate and may include a markup, which Upwork doesn't publish as a percentage.
