How honest should one be? I personally dislike this template, that idea of including the messy "Popular Tags" not just once but twice same thing about category list and directory stats, how many time do you need the same info on one page? it is a lost of real estate and not very useful (yes you can actually create several footer and use the one you need as you want to output NEW information). What are you trying to show, if it is link they should take the center place, not be lost in the middle of not so useful info. Not a step up from the default template.
You have to love honesty!!![]()
While I will agree with you on the home page that it is duplicated, this template doesn't come with multiple sidebars. So if you want those things, say on the details page or browse page, you'll need to see them in the home page as well.
How hard would it be to create a second sidebar and other pages so the home page and others would have their own unquie pages... Not very hard at all. But it is time consuming, and right now, with my 4 yr old son being as sick as he is, time isn't something I have very much of.
I would tend to disagree with you here. Maybe there is lost real estate on the template... Maybe there is duplicate content... But regardless, its 100000% better than Kosmos!!! Kosmos is so hard on the eyes, it almost begs for you to leave the site. What I really liked about the new template was the 3 columns and the colors were VERY easy on the eyes, along with being netural colors. I can easily go in later and create unquie content and shuffle things around, but Kosmos will always be hard on the eyes.

Kosmos shall be banished
I've hated it since it was new. Just give us some time.
Please do believe me, I am not trying to start a controversy. I do not like Kosmos either, that is why I never used it, as for the three column thing, I am not convince.
I think a template should be a simple as possible, providing at first glance the information and tools the user is seeking. Are "Tag Cloud" or "Page ranks" or "Site Stats" what users are interested in or are they coming to find information and if so shouldn't the search form have a prominent place on the page and the "Power Search" be immediately available?
Of course since we are so small we have to give ourself some legitimacie, so we may speak about the why of this directory, we may tell about our stats (if they are favorable > 1.000.000 hits out) tell the user how many link we have (if we have more than 100 links in a given category and more than 10.000 altogether).
I did retain in my own sites those information which are favorable to me and reject the one which are not, why would I want to advertise that no one use my directory (few hit out) and that I have almost nothing to show anyway (< 1000 links), I also kept those tools which are useful to the user.
I think that the main purpose of a template is to make the site look good, not just cosmetically and some time it is best done by not volunteering information which make us appear even more insignificant than what we are.
You were saying that "Kosmos, almost begs for you to leave the site" When a first look show you an almost empty directory it beg for you not to comeback. Of course we cannot all have thousand of links but you do not have to tell.
Of course everyone wants their site to look good. But over time you come to know (via logs) what your users are looking at and clicking on.
Yes, the overall look and colour of the site are one of the first things a user sees. This is why most people change the template immediately. I think the new default will use blue and red perhaps as it's main colours (just pulling this out of my arse at the moment).
As for showing stats, I always hide mine until the site is more successful. Since I don't do mailing lists, I always hide that stat anyways. There's some sites where I've hidden the number of links everywhere because they were low. Sometimes on an established directory I'll also label a category "NEW!" if I've just added it and it has zero or very few entries.
It's all about the presentation, and everyone perceives the presentation differently.
I did exactly that with Yolander. Made a copy of the sidebar, removed unwanted items and added a block. Saved it as sidebar0.html and changed the include in the index.html. After thinking on it the actual working time was less than an hour or about the time it takes to review 4-5 submissions.
I like it though do want to change a few things when I learn how. Time is the problem so I'll just ask a few questions and hope someone will answer ( my uninformed questions) to save me trying to reinvent the wheel myself.
OK first dumb Question?
Where are the icons located for the category lists. How do I get rid of the X's.
Thanks in advance
Pete
The title etc I'm getting to?
