    Default upgrade or not to upgrade

    What will happend with template after I make an upgrade from 5.4.x to 1.3 if I don't upgrade the template ? Will it run correctly ?

    No it won't. Some things will still work, but you will have LOTS of things that won't and some errors to go along with it.
