OUCH...! 20,000 categories. Must be another DMOZ clone.
And while I realize that one person won't go thru all of them, if he visited one category every minute, it would take 333.33 hours or 14 days to visit them all. 14 days at 1 every minute! And that does not even consider the links.
Speaking of which, I realize that you are just starting, so with 20,000 categories, 15,000 links is just a beginning. If you have one link per category, that leaves at least 5,000 categories without links.
so the how many links should a category have? while there is no "normal" or magic number, with 20,000 categories the total number of links gets real large real quick.
If 5 links per category, then 100,000 links.
If 10 links per category, then 200,000 links.
If 15 links per category, then 300,000 links.
If 20 links per category, then 400,000 links.
If 25 links per category, then 500,000 links.
If 30 links per category, then 600,000 links.
All of that on software that costs less than $100. Amazing.
I have created and browsed link directories for the past 6 years and have come to certain conclusions when I surf them. I do not like spending my time clicking on categories. I do not like clicking on empty categories and I don't like having to drill-down 15 levels to get to any meaningful links. And I do not like categories that don't show me how many links are in them.
There was someone on here a little less than a year ago who wanted to download DMOZ. All 600,000 directories and 5.5 million links. Using $99 software to run it. Truely amazing.
Oh, well, who am I to judge. I apologize for my tirade. Nothing wrong with thinking big. DMOZ didn't start with 600,000 cats and 5.5 million links.
I wish you great success. Heck, maybe you could even use my AddLinks/EditLinks to build your site.
