Default How to find phrases in IndexU

Since so many people ask where to find specific text to change in IndexU I thought I would let users know how I do it and what software I use.

Get the program here (it is freeware)

The program I use is called InfoRapid Search & Replace. While you don't need to use the search AND replace feature, you can use the search easily to find what you need.

On the Search tab, the first box is "Search For". Here you can enter a word or phrase and InfoRapid S&R will search for it.

The second box is "In Files", simply have an asterisk there (*) and it will search all files for you.

The third box is "In Directories". Simply browse to the folder you want to search in. This program will search every file in that directory for the string you want. To the right of this make sure that "With Subdirectories" is checked.

The last box is "Search Method". I prefer to leave it at "Exact Phrase Matching" as I am typically searching for something very specific.

Then click Start to get your search going. The program is quick and will show you every file that the word or phrase you searched for has been found in. Of course if you searched for "My" you would get a lot of results. But searching for "My Favorites" will get you two results.

This program has saved me hundreds, if not thousands of hours over the years searching folders for files with specific words or phrases.

    Hope this helps others out.

Bruce, this is an excellent resource and you made it even more valuable by giving your excellent summary of how you use it. I noticed this because lately I have noticed that your answers have become much more abbreviated.

You are a tremendous help... Thanks!

Yes they have been getting more abbreviated, mostly because the questions have already been asked before and the answers are already on the forum. New users just aren't bothering to search the forum and expecting things to be handed to them.

That's not me. To me it's easier to give them the ability to do it themselves. This is a script they're going to use for a long time and they need to learn how to deal with it and how to use it. Once they learn about it they will use it more often and do more with it. Then comes additional sites and so on.

I guess it all comes down to "give a man a fish and he eats for a day, teach him to fish and he can eat for a lifetime"

I am in complete agreement if there was a comprehensive User Guide as good as your very well done Installation Guide.

However, without it, I have spent countless hours of trial and error on the necessary changes for my site in addition to, as you know, several questions on the forum and a sizable number of individual emails and private messages to you and others.

Without the help of a few key people on this forum I could not have succeeded... at all.

Honestly, the lack of a User Guide has caused me to be at least two or three months late in launching my site. Having a User Guide is truly "Teaching men to fish".

Meanwhile, thanks for all you do. Without you moderating this forum this program would eventually stagnate, new users would give up in frustration, and modifications would probably stop.

    I wouldn't go that far.

If only I could get a possible release date from Dody then I could deal with the manual.

It seems that there would not be that much "changed" in a manual based on 5.4.

Since major portions would go unaffected and the content is largely modular, wouldn't it be easy to edit the completed guide as required and add the revisions and mods into the text, where applicable for the next revision?

    This is an outstanding resource.

It is a must for a new user to edit and build their site.

I wish I had seen this posting a few months ago. I cannot believe I overlooked this sticky!
