Default Langauge Question

I have a interesting question about Langauge, I have a name
Ōtaki

That I would like to use in a category. however when i export from excel to csv ... it turns it into a ? ie ?taki when I import it into indexu-deluxe.

Does anyone know of a way i can export from excel into indexu deluxe and have it display the correct way?

Ive tried exporting to unicode but its timing out in the importing via phpmyadmin

Your database must be in utf-8 format, and the file that you export from excel must be in utf-8. Deluxe already uses utf-8.

Thanks for the reply Bruce,

currently i think its latin1_general_ci in the Collation

Can i alter the whole database? or do i have to do only the fields that i need to change *basically just category name in the cats table and probibly the name in the category path table*

utf8_unicode_ci

is that the right one to use?

cheers for the help

Yes you can able to alter the database, however I've never done it before.

ive changed the header file to show

<meta http-equiv="content-type" content="text/html; charset=utf-8" />

ive changed the databate fields to utf unicode (for the name in the cats table) and also the name in the cat links table)

its showing up fine when its being viewed from phpmyadmin.. but not in the browser viewing the site.... its coming up a ? mark still.

its a puzzling one... im trying to do as much reading up on it as i can... but still not coming across anything decent......

erm changed the header of what to utf-8?

Are you talking about IndexU? You said earlier you're using Deluxe, Deluxe already uses UTF-8.
