Default Up #&!@ creek without a paddle....

I think I'm up #&!@ creek without a paddle. My main, major site is Web4URL. The production site is still using 5.4 and I've had a testing site for 2 weeks now trying to replicate all the mods and customizations I have with it, on Deluxe 1.1.

I'm only about half way through adding all the MOD's and then today I read this thread:

http://nicecoder.com/community/showthread.php?t=7675

And it dawned on me... If new updates to Deluxe will be coming monthly or even every other month, I'm going to have the same problem each time. Unless all my MODs can be made into plugins ( which I'm not even sure is possible ) I'll have to go back and make all the custom changes to files each and every time.

I'm thinking I'm stuck with using 5.4 on this site??!?!?!

You missed some posts then, I've stated at least twice on the forum now that IndexU SHOULD be going monthly starting in October.

Yes mods could be a pain in the arse, but I have to be blunt and say that most people don't have mods. They simply use IndexU straight out of the box with some minor cosmetic changes.

So yes, you are a minority. But saying that lets see if we can't find out a way to minimize issues with upgrades and plugins. Which mods are you referring to specifically? Perhaps we can try and build some of them as plugins instead.

By the way, if all mods were created as plugins this wouldn't be an issue. I encourage mod writers to look into creating their mods as plugins.

Not so much as missed it, but remembered it!

Well, my only response to that is... I guess thats why my site is successful and most others are not! To think you can have or run a successful web directory straight out of the box is a ridiculous notion. But then again, thats probably a whole other topic for another time

Code:
Content visible to License Owner only.
Let me see if I can get a list of all the MODs I have on that site and post back here with them at some point later in the day. I'm about ready to go into a meeting right now.

Code:
Content visible to License Owner only.
Well, from what I can see, other than the IndexU programmers, it would seem mpdaddy is one of the few that can create plugins at this point. If I remember correctly, ESM gave it a go and ran into some problems with it. I'm trying to remember, but I think other than the programmers, mpdaddy is the only one that has created a plugin for Deluxe.

I am sure I can convert all the mods you have into plugins. The problem I have been running into is the lack of hooks in the core code. I could convert some pieces of the mod into a plugin, but then you would still have to edit some files to insert the code needed where there are no hooks to execute it at the right time.

I am currently rewriting all my mods as plugin where it is possible. I would definately suggest that other mod developers do the same. I am still struggling a little with how the plugin system works, but it will get easier with time.

My suggestion is to stick with 5.4 on that site for right now. I can attempt to convert your mods into plugins in the current v1.1 code. If I need more hooks in certain areas, I can ask if they can add them in the next version. If/when we get the hooks added, you can then convert your site over to IndexU Deluxe.

With a little help from Bruce and some flexibility in adding hooks to the core code, plugins can be more complex and add more value to the script.

Frank, I will be replying to your email shortly.

Regards
Wayne

I"m all for more hooke... OOPS, wrong thought!

Hooks, we're talking about hooks here. Yes there will be more, even if I have to go hire them myself. I mean ADD them myself.

This could be a never ending joke, gotta be careful.

Trust me... I must have changed the subject line of this post 20 times before submitting it! LOL

And if one of NiceCoder's new versions comes complete with hooks and hookers, I dont think we'll need to figure out how to get more people posting on the forum!!!
