A simple question

Hello,

I want to define some things such as $area = "Brighton" so that I can refer to that throughout the site on different pages. Where would be the best place to put that so it's available on all the pages?

(I want to do it this way as I want to use the same templates for other sites in different areas and it would be much easier if I could just change one variable rather than having to change lots of hard coded stuff)

I'd like to refer to it for example on index.html and within some of the blocks.

Most variables aren't global, so in order to add it to use it on index and in blocks you would need to add it to the corresponding php pages (index.php, block.whatever.php).

No matter which way you're going to go about it, you will have to change hard code. Either in the html or in the php, there is no simple solution to do this where you want.
