    Default Search

    Hello,

I have a few question about the "Search" and "Power Search"
    1) I do not quiet understand how is search working, let say that I have a link with "Pediatrician" in the keyword table. If I input pediatrician in the search I will get the proper result but if I input pediatrician, pediatricians, child care I will have 0 result. How could I change the query so Idexu will look at each input separate by a coma as separate key words. Indexu would take each word (separate by a coma) and would not use keyword = (what ever is inputed by the user) but keyword LIKE (what ever is inputed by the user). The way power search is currently working is very restrictive, synonym and plural do exist.
    2) In search how could I search not only in one category but also in the subcategories, once again a link being in a specific category does not imply that it does not belong to other upper or lower categories in the category tree.

    Thank you for your help

PS. BTW, I do understand that my request for license upgrade is a "Low Priority" I hope it does not mean that it will be ignore for ever, if so please do let me know, I am sure that other programmers will be happy to get my money right away.

Both the search and power search use boolean searches, which means that in between words there is a default which can be AND, OR, NOT and NOR which can sometimes also be duplicated with quotes, - and +.

OK, so now that's over. When you search for "pediatrician, pediatricians, child care" without the quotes it won't find anything because you're searching for "pediatrician,", not "pediatrician". Get it? The comma is causing errors. You might search this way but no one I have ever seen searches like that on the internet. Commas are unnecessary and unwanted. Simply search for "pediatrician child care".

Why? Because "pediatrician" is the same as "pediatricians" but "pediatricians" is NOT the same as "pediatrician". Do you understand that? The S at the end makes it a different word, but drop the S and you get a match on both words.

In fact you should be able to search for "pedia" and get both pediatrician and pediatricians.

As for your other question, If you search in A category, the script should be searching in all of the subcategories as well. If you search in a category that has no subcats then of course it would stop there. If you do a general search it will search in all categories.

Programmers are offline during the weekend, so they don't respond to requests at that time (obviously). If you have a ticket open it should be replied to tonight. If not please let me know.

I did read your reply and try it on your demo, I use Bonsai and butterfly
    Butterfly return 60 links
    Bonsai return 147 links
    buterfly bonsai return 0 link
    "butterfly bonsai" return 0 links
"butterfly OR bonsai" return 0 links
"butterfly" OR "bonsai" return 0 links
butterfly OR bonsai return 0 links

How am I suppose to formulate my query to get the links which contain either butterfly OR bonsai?

Early on in my forum use I wrote a description of how the search works, it no longer appears to work that way.

However using + works for additional words. So you can search for bonsai +butterfly or bonsai +fly if you want to keep it short.

For some reason the demo throws an error when using +, but the results still display. I'll have to talk to someone about that.

    Hello again,

Actually bonsai +butterfly does not work the search give you only the result with butterfly.
butterfly +bonsai give you 60 links
butterfly +bonsai give you 147 links

    butterfly +bonsai should equal butterfly +bonsai =(+/-) 207 links

I did try your (+) suggestion and it works on my site my next question is how to handle "child care" if I just search for child care I do find link with "child care" but if I do pediatrician +child care if find links which include pediatrician and child and care (notice not child care) so how do I make the search find what I am looking for.
Note that even so I got result using (+) produce an error message because the script does not know how to handle the category output when there are several keywords.
BTW I am not trying to be difficult search is the main way users are finding what they are looking for, my directory has 600.000 listings having a search working properly is a must.

I did send my request on July 4, receive an answer the 8 (telling me that it would be taken care off as soon as they have nothing better to do, like watering their plants) and I am still waiting for my request to be taken care off, 9 days, lol
How many new customer did you lose that way?

They're just doing what they do, and if they keep it up they're going to be on the way out too.

Give me a ticket ID and I'll look into it.

If your directory has that many listings then why aren't you using the google custom search? I make some decent money from it and it's a lot better of a search than IndexU has (not putting down indexu, it's just better).

I look at "Googl Custom Search" but it would not fit my need. My directory is more like the Yellow page. My directory list the health care professional in the US. User need to be able to search within a a define geaographical area (Zip, Area code, City or State) for a given health care provider. Google search does not seems to give me that type of search, Indexu does (if the search works properly).
Still I have smaller directory which could use a properly working search so once again:

That's not how the search is supposed to work. It should be a pure boolean search but it's not working like that. I'll see what I can find out for you.

Most of my sites use the google custom search if they're large, so I almost never actually use the search function any longer.

Actually, I thought the Power Search was suppose to work that way.

    Hello again,

When can I expect to receive some information about this "Search" problem?

The search "issue" has already been addressed and will be available in the next release. If you want you can try to integrate the changes from the SVN version but for most users it's easier to wait for the next release.

When is the next release? Very soon. We never give dates for releases.
