€ euro symbol results in ? as currency symbol

Hello,

In the Admin I try to add the Euro currency symbol, but after saving it results in a ? Also characters like ï è are resulting in error symbols in the front-end of the website.

I am using utf-8 and set the language to Dutch- Belgium.
The gettext functionality was not working during install, eventhough php was compiled with mbstring.

Can someone tell me how I can get the € symbol working?
