    Default where is .htaccess?

I don't see a folder called .htaccess on my server. Is this the same folder as httpdocs?

If not, where is .htaccess located?

.htaccess isn't a folder, it's a file that can be edited with any text editor (if you choose to do so). It is located in the root of your webserver which is usually /public_html/

As a note, it's in the same folder where you see the following folders admin, admin_tpl, folder, images, backup blocks, cache etc.

And I also forgot, in some webservers .htaccess is hidden. You can usually find this file through your control panel if it is hidden. You can also upload a new .htaccess file to overwrite the old one but it will still be hidden. I really don't know why that is done that way. I think it's plesk that hides them by default or it could just be host specific.

Bruceper... Your right... And he mentioned 'httpdocs' so he is more than likely using Plesk

    darn I'm good

Actually i used to have a few sites on a Cobalt Raq server running plesk. I hated that setup, very non friendly and doesn't let you do any magic with htaccess.

also lots of ftp programs hide the file, filezilla for example requires you to go to view > hidden files.

WinSCP, Cute_FTP, and WSFTP all display .htaccess

Plesk is nice for a Windows based web server, but I dont care for it at all on Linux... In my opinion, nothing beats cPanel / WHM. Its even gui friendlier now with version 11

Bruceper and others thank you for your helpful answer.

I do use plesk and cute FTP. So how do I chmod 777 .htaccess file?

I am having a problem saving changes I make on the index page and I think it may be do with this (as .htaccess file was the only one that I wasn't able to make writable).

Go to the plesk control panel - domains - file manager - find .htaccess - click where it says rw- r-- r-- and then check all of the boxes that you see and click OK
