truncate text

i need to truncate text that appears on the browse.php. for example, when a user clicks a cat it may go to:

browse.php?pg_which=2&cat=1168

which then shows links for that cat. under the title is where the desription goes, it is this text i need to trucate. found how to do it with detail_link, but there is no link for browse.html. thanks
