    Default Testing the new version

After this new version, how long will we have to wait until we get a bug fix version. For example, is there a plan to fix the bugs and release subversions like 6.0.1 on a weekly or monthly basis? Or, are we just going to get stuck using the 6.0 version for the next year or longer? I installed the svn versionabout an hour ago, which I am assuming by Dody's comments is final for the 6.0 release, and I have already seen a few problems (2 problems to be exact). I don't want them to delay the release, but I also don't want to fix a bunch of problems.

Please note, I have not seen an installation on another server other than mine. With that being said, these problems may or may not occur on other servers.

    Problem #1:
In the add.php page, all three category selection dropdowns and the "Listing Type" dropdown are misaligned when using IE7. The url is http://www.scriptdragon.com/test/add.php. They look fine in Firefox 2.0.0.12.

    Problem #2:
In admin, when you click on the Template Manager link, it lists index.html as a valid template. When selected, it displays an error (no kidding huh). I know it is showing whatever it finds in the themes folder, but it ignores the other 2 files in the folder. Why don't it ignore the index.html? It should only show folders and not files, right?

If anyone has installed the svn version downloaded today, please comment on whether you also have these problems using your server.

I am not trying to point out stuff to make the coders look bad. I am just hoping they will make a few last minute fixes/changes before releasing the new version. I know they are trying to get the new version to us quickly since so many people anxiously waiting for it. I do like the new admin theme.

    Regards
    Wayne

Just an addon to my post above. Here is the actual emails that were sent after I made my test submissions using the svn version. I have changed the email and url only.

    Code:
Thank you for your submission to <%$site_name%>.
    Title : Test 1
    Url : mytestdomain.com
    Description : test
    Category : Test Category
    Contact name : Administrator
    Email : webmaster@mydomain.com
Your link will be reviewed by our team. We will contact you soon
when we have reviewed your link.
    Regards,
    <%$site_name%> Team
It is displaying <%$site_name%> instead of my site name. Looks like the email template is not getting the variable passed to it properly.

And then after accepting the link it send an email with the subject of "Editor Approved". I did not approve an editor, I approved a link.

Here is that email with the email, url, and password changed:
    Code:
Your submission at <%$site_name%> has been approved.
    Resource ID : 1
    Title : Test 1
    Url : mytestdomain.com
    Description : test
    Category : Test Category
    Contact name : Administrator
    Email : webmaster@mydomain.com
    Password : MYLINKPASSWORD
    Regards,
    <%$site_name%> Team
That would be 4 problems in just over an hour.

    Regards
    Wayne

I don't even now why you would be asking for a "bug fix" version when the final version isn't even released or complete yet.

SVN still says "unstable" which means that it's going to have issues. Wait for the final to see what happens. As with many programs that have a new major version release there is bound to be some issues. If they are reported by users a bug fix version would be released quickly.

I am going off what Dody said

We will release next week because it's week end.
To me that says, I would release it now because it's finished, but I want to wait until the beginning of next week. To me that says that the svn is the new version, even if the page says "Unstable".

I am simply pointing out that further testing and bug fixes should be done prior to the release. I certainly will not use it in this fashion. And, I am sure you will be bombarded with postings about this don't work, that don't work, help me, help me. Then we will get the typical reply of "It will be fixed in the next release sometime between 2009 and 2011. We want the new release, but we want a working new release.

It has obviously not been tested fully. I would bet my last dollar that without me pointing these problems out (maybe even now), the svn would have been the final released version.

Just to offer my two cents, it might prove wise for NiceCoder to allow for beta releases. Make it closed to the general public, but allow some ( who currently have a valid license ) to signup as a beta tester.

Then let us ripp into it and report back if there are any problems. Obviously this isn't something new... alot of companies do this.

I will say this much, mpdaddy just saved me a bunch of time. I too was under the impression that the SVN version would be the released version due to Dody's post.

I agree with FSGDAG. A beta version would be nice.

I mean no disrespect towards anyone here and I am not trying to start any arguments. I love the script or I would not be here. I just know there is going to be a lot of posts and tickets because of problems. Bruce, you are going to have to answer these posts or tickets. How many issues do you want to resolve; 20 or 50?

Dody is probably sleeping right now, but I would love to hear his comments.

What is SVN for? That IS the beta version. And if you (or anyone for that matter) has found bugs they should be posted to the bug reports forum. I know you posted one, but version 6 has been in beta for months and no one is posting anything.

Doesn't matter how many tickets I answer, it's what I do.

Version 6 has been in development, not beta. When he is actively adding code each day, I am sure you do not want a daily bug report from me. It is when the coding is almost done, you open it up for testing and get reports from users on issues that need to be addressed. When you get to that stage, you are in beta. As far as I can tell you have been in the beta stage for less than 48 hours, and not for months.

    This might help you out.
Beta: Formally, it is a product in that is in its final stages of testing.
    Testing, not development.

A good link to reference would be this one. http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&r...ition&ct=title

Given this position, I would suggest everyone just leave the SVN version alone and deal with any bugs that arise from the final version. No need to jump the gun.

Call it what you will, the SVN version of IndexU is still considered beta. There is (as far as I know) no major code being added anymore anyways.

Dody would love to hear feedback and issues and problems.

Well, I am confused then. I always thought that the purpose of a beta version was to let real customers test the software with the intention of fixing any found bugs prior to the final release.

If folks provide dody with "feedback and issues and problems," will the SVN/beta version be corrected and become part of a "bug fix" version which would ultimately become the final version...???

That was the main purpose of my post. I was posting showing the problems and asking if they will be fixed before the release. If not, why? If he knows about things not working, has the ability to fix them, and don't, that is just plain STUPID.

well, I don't ever recall a beta version of INDEXU ever being announced going back at least as far as v 3.0. and I consider the SVN download more an ALPHA version than a BETA version.

having said that, the SVN concept is relatively new concept. I don't think we have a forum to discuss the SVN version. maybe we should.
