Question Odd problem with new install when trying to modify template

I just did a new install here:

    http://www.web-hosting-guide.us

Everything seemed to work fine, but when I went to modify index.html I get a strange error. Whatever change I make to that template results in the corruption of some code in that template. You can see <Êtegory%> which is a corruption of
    Code:
     <%category%>
The odd thing is it doesn’t matter what change I make to that template it produces the same error. However, when I re-upload that index.html file via FTP it is fine as long as I don’t attempt to modify it in the cp. To try and troubleshoot this I messed around with the header template and any changes I made to it worked and produced no errors. This one really has me scratching my head. Does anyone have any ideas as to what is causing the problem?

It seems to me that when you modify the file via cp then the file is actually uploaded via the browser in Binary format and not in ASCII. Consequently, the file is corrupted.

You should also contact your hosting company as it is a problem for them to solve.

    Good luck

Well apparently I stumped the support people. I also wondered if it might be a hard drive problem.

I think its more of an uploading problem of ascii and binary. Try the installation again.

I re-uploaded all of the files, and reinstalled the entire thing tonight. I still got the same error.

Which ftp client do you use for the upload?

Try to use the 'auto detect' option for the file type function when uploading the files. It might work - it might not work.

The 'auto detect- function is available with Cute FTP which is a good ftp client to use when you upload the files.

Have you got the same problem on your main site?

    Good luck.

I use a FTP Program that came with one of my web page editors. To try and make sure everything was right I uploaded everything in ASCII and then I shot the images back up in Binary. I messed around a little more with the templates tonight and the only template that is creating problems is the index.html template. Over the years I would see corruption in some of my sites and usually when that happens something is wrong with the server. I don’t want to get too far along with that site because I think I am going to use the new templates once they are released.
