Member list doesn't match Search all users in Admin Panel
Another strange one - As I have had a few (dozen) people register on the site with dodgy links I've been keeping my eye on it. (Is there a way we can generate an email when a new user registers?)
When I look at the Member List from the home page there is one user that does not show up in the Admin panel. Users -> Search -> Leave everything blank -> Search.
Not sure if this is a legit user or if it wasn't how to delete it.

If they don't show up in the search it means they haven't verified their account. There is no way to view those easily in 5.x. You'd need to manage the users directly in the database if they aren't verified.
This feature is available in Deluxe.

5.40 was released early 2007, it's almost 2009 now so of course over the last 18 or so months there have been changes and updates.
I'm sure it would be a simple SQL query, just search for users in idx_users whose status is equal to 0.

Actually - wouldn't it be a "bug" if users details were displayed before they verify them?

Mpdaddy created a MOD for this to show the unverified users in the admin
backend, the mod was for the deluxe template files but im sure it would work with a bit of tinkering. Deluxe now has this built in but it could be usfull for the 5.4x users out there.
Maybe if you ask nicely mpdaddy could sent you the files?
