Question confused: importing converted data into indexu

    hi all.

i am having a bit of a time trying to import data into indexu from data that i have already formatted (including category id's and all) that i have worked on and saved in excel.

understanding that you have to save the file either as a .txt file or a .csv file, i have attempted to import the data which is about 1,700 links.

the first time i imported.....i only got 10 listings to show up with one being correct and the others were skewed (i.e. the data such as the name was not in the appropriate area, or the mailing list was in the description area...etc..etc.) which looked odd after i did all that seemed logical in order to ensure that it all works.

the second time, what i did was i simply tried to only import 20 listings (20 rows), and all i got was the first of the 10 to show up. none of the others visible.

i spent about 16 hours ensuring that all the data was placed in the needed areas (values etc..etc), but i still get this same situation.

i have the file ready at hand and ready to go...so i guess i just need a step-by-step detail on how to do this.

i also have bbedit which i usually use for raw text editing, but for this it just seemed just more logical to use excel for this task.

thus far, i have not pulled out my secret weapon, bbedit, without the need to realize that there has to be a better way to do this before i proceed in the wrong direction.

overall, in summary, the reason im doing this is because i used to use a program called "hotcgilinks" which i purchased like almost 7 years ago, that uses the cgi bin to operate.

but recently my hosting company told me that it was using up like at times 95% cpu and they told me that i need to do something about that. so with that said, and being an indexu fan....i decided that i would simply convert all the data....and kind of cut and paste all the various values according to the indexu set up, and do it that way. so that when the importation takes places, everything simply falls in place.

so here i am and i'm just having a bit of a problem.

lehman's terms in explaining a step by step process in resolving this would be so so great and much appreciated. i feel like im almost there.

    thanks

    1) HOW are you importing the file? Via the IndexU admin panel I assume

    2) Are you exporting as TAB delimited or COMMA delimited? It must be TAB delimited.

    3) I assume you're aware that you need to import categories and links seperately. Do the cats first and then the links.

    4) If data was in the wrong places, then your excel file was not formatted correctly. You cannot miss any fields, even if they blank.

    5) An example Excel spreadsheet is available at http://www.nicecoder.com/community/f...template-5118/ One sheet is for links, the other is for categories. you can only export them one at a time in Excel

    6) Finally, if you are unable to do it, I can do this for you for a small fee. I simply need the spreadsheet and I will convert it to an .sql file that can be imported into phpmyadmin

interesting bruce......actually i got it working...but what i had to do was copy the whole excel file and then paste it into bbedit. but everything you said was up to par.

once i did that bruce, everything worked fine. the only problem now is the dates all say Dec. 31, 1969 or something like that.

i need a step by step process on how to handle that bruce.....once i do that, dang i think that i am fine.

as for the service fee, thanks sooo much for offering....you've always been great to me and i really appreciate that. i see how much you put in on the boards and it's simply good to have someone like you around.

if it wasn't for you.....i duuno how things would work, but overall things now are much better then they were in the past. so big ups to you.

p.s. - i might be crossing through winnipeg on my way to dauphin and crane river to see my girlfriend in the coming months.....hopefully if i do....maybe we can have coffee or something like that. thanks again bruce.

btw......i was able to complete this....and as mentioned before....i did a whole conversion from the Hot Links Pro application to sorting all the data...and then prepping it...and then importing it into Indexu.

    it worked great!

but i must say....it was a lot of work...but at the end of the day...it was fine.

i was able to preserve the following values:

    name
    email addresses of link owners
    password
    keywords
    link description
    and the URL

indeed this was a huge accomplishment that required juggling a few different applications.

i sorted out like about 1,700 links. so the whole process of doing it took probably about i would say......hmmm.....3-4 days...spread out.
