Image map for IndexU category list

The coolest ideas usually come from other sources. Today someone asked me what I would charge for a mod like this. I quoted them a price and then thought about it and decided to release it as a mod for paid members.

It's an image map for your categories, and as far as I know, no one's ever done anything like this before.

We start with an image and do lots of fun stuff with image mapping software, then we add our categories and a simple change in index.html and blam! You've got a nice map instead of plain boring text.

To be honest, the way it's done you will only be able to use your site for United States based sites, but of course you're welcome to imagemap anything you want and use this idea.

You must also use the database of categories I have created because the image map is hard coded for the categories. You must also have mod_rewrite enabled and the mod_rewrite settings must be set at default.

This idea could be used for a different country, or even a city or a single state/province. The time a user would need to take to map out the areas is the issue.

Is there any chance that it can be done with existing categories??? I think this would be GREAT for Web4Jersey and Web4Pennsylvania

Of course it could be, you'd just have to program the right categories for the right area of the map. It's a bit harder but not impossible.

The big problem with doing one of your sites like this is that the imagemap should be used for areas, such as towns or counties, and not just for general categories.

If you reorganized the site by geographical area then it could be done.

Of course you'd need a nice sized map of the state, for most templates it should be 450-500px wide and the locations clearly marked on the map.

No problem at all, as you can see I did another one for Canadian provinces but also added major cities as hotspots as well. This makes the imagemap more difficult to create, but the end user doesn't see anything but an easy to view map that they can click on.
