    Default vBulletin workarounds

Well, most everyone knows what I think of vB. I realize it has a large following and I agree that it is certainly in the top 10 of the forum software.

But its implementation of certain features drive me crazy ( and I am already certifiable )! The Normal mode is pretty much useless. And many of the features are inserted at the very end of the text regardless of where your cursor is. And
For example, if I want to go back and bold part of what I have already typed in this message, here is the process:
    • click the bold icon
    • go to the very end of the text
    • locate the curser after te [ B]
    • press the enter key ( I do this so I don't have to locate the cursor between the [ B][ /B]
    • click the Close Current Tag
    • copy the [ B]
    • locate the place where I want to insert the [ B]
    • paste the code
    • go back to the end of the text
    • copy the [ /B]
    • locate the place where I want to to insert the [ /B]
    • paste the code
That just drives me crazy. I guess I could just type in the [ B] and [ /B] where I want it but that just seem silly in today's WYSIWYG environment.

Well, I have solved my problem!!! WooHoo.

Now whenever I have to use vB, I just go to the forum at my site http://www.indexuhelp.com/forum/ and create the message there. Then I just copy and paste it into vB. I LOVE IT.

    • Now when I want to bold some text, I just highlight it and click the bold icon.
    • Now when I click one of the smileys it is inserted at wherever the cursor is ( only four actually are compatible with vB but they are the ones I use most anyway ).
    • Now when I want to put something in a QUOTE box, I just highlight it and click the QUOTE icon.
    • If I use a list (like the one I am creating here) I have to change the [ LIST TYPE=square] to [ LIST] but I can live with that.
    • Now when I want to use the edit buttom to change a msg I have already posted, I can preview it before saving it! (vB has no preview feature when you edit a post)
    • Now I have preview button at the bottom of the previewed msg and I don't have to go way down below to preview it again.

Little things like that make all the difference in the world when using software. vB just hasn't figured that out in the 2.x.x versions. The good news is that they have corrected that with version 3. whenever they release it. Until then, I will use the above.

I do not care for vB either but what BB do you like, I was thinking about phpBB or Invision, which one do you prefer. Speaking about integration, I was thinking to "integrate" Indexu and PostNuke or Indexu and phpWebsite what do you think and maybe add phpClassified?

well I happen to like FUDForum at http://fud.prohost.org/. It is just my opinion but I think it is the most powerful forum software of all the PHP ones out there. And it is the only free one with a tree/flat mode (i like the flat mode but sometimes I have no clue what post the msg is replying to).

I have installed and used both phpBB and Invision. I kinda like Invision as the interface is a little more crisp but phpBB seems to have the edge with the feature set.

I really don't know much about those programs.
