Most images associated with indexu portal, such as logos or small photos don't require much scaling.

Also, imagemagick isn't installed on most servers and most servers will not install it for you, so you will have to install it yourself.

Asking users to install it, will confused them and make the product a little more confusing.

Thats just my personal opinion and experience with other scripts. ie. imagefolio and photogallery etc.

    Default Image Magick

Hart_House, I have to respectfully disagree.
    ... Sort of

I agree that with you that portals use icons and smaller images as a general rule of thumb. But a script like IndexU seems to encourage people to be more creative with what they do with it by being customizable and including the templates.

    example:

Assume I have a directory of Restaurants and I would like to include a photo of the facade. And if I want to let the end user include links and include an image, he/she doesn't have to worry about loading ImageMagick, it's done. As a matter of fact he doesn't even have to worry about how to format or resize the image. All they have to do is upload the image.

I suppose this kinda gets away from the Yahoo type portal, but if you look at a site like CitySearch you'll see they push the envelope on what a portal should be.

...And just because the IndexU interfaced with Imagemagick, it doesn't mean that you need to be required to use it. I use several scripts where it is an option along with others.

I realize that this forum is for Suggestions and not debate, so I apologize, but I just thought I should outline why I suggested it.

And IndexU really is a great "script" as is. I thoroughly enjoyed working with it but think adding another tool to the toolbox would only enhance it.

    Cheers!!!!

Its not a debate at all. Its you and me working together to try to improve indexu as a great product. Only with dicussions and suggestions can we improve this.

I of course would love to use imagemagick or have the ability for images to be customize and resized with ease.

If it can be done with ease, I'm all for it.
