    Default like Tophosts

looked at all link systems this seems best, but one feature wanted is that it would count clickthroughs from sites that create a link back and move the link in indexu up in accordance with the clickthroughs.

This encourages users to place a link on their site and is cheaper than a refferal program. it also rewards those that support the portal in a meaningful way.

If a site pays it should still get presidence but for non paying listings is a perfect reward system.

    well, this looks doable.

Maybe as a paid hack/mod, if folks are interested in this feature.

    Maybe as a paid hack/mod??

And now much extra would that be kind sir???

Actually I am searching like mad for a perfect portal script, yours is very very close. I was just writing a friend also looking, that had just sent me to another listing free program. I thought it might be of interest to you to see my real and exact thoughts!!

    copy of text:::
Looked at it and interesting BUT does not hold candle to indexu, but very good, I would far prefer to pay for indexu but really wish indexu had the features like tophosts and imagemaqic and new listings directory and clicktroughs counter from links with a built in email tracking system to notify users of new listings in their category of interest, all the stuff we discussed. Just do not understand why they would build such a great program and ignore obvious features.

I guess no program is perfect but these above seem very essential so I am keeping looking for a while yet....

One other thing is I can program hacks in but do not like the idea as when you update scripts then whammo hacks may not work really would like the program to be as hack free as possible

I don't own INDEXU. I'm just a user like you.

    Maybe $25

Here are some comments I had earlier:
Links programs are basic by nature. They provide the skeleton to be fleshed out by add-ons, plug-ins and hacks/mods. Only when a feature attains the status of a "standard" requirement, should it be included as part of the links program.

I see this feature as a hack/mod. Most folks will not want this feature. But for those that do, a hack/mod will do just fine.]
Actually, some of the "obvious features" are not so obvious. As an example, lots of folks want a PPC; but just as many don't need it. Of all the major links programs that I am aware of, if they offer PPC, it is as a plug-in.

I'd be interested in such a hack... I'd need a but more information on how it 'moves something up' the indexu list though - how would that work?

I did work on it and got to the point where I thought it should work. But I cannot use a relative path to application.php and I couldn't figure out how to use a URL. Or maybe I had some other error.

But should I figure that out, the rest should be doable in short order.

hmmm, right now I have it sorting on the number of incoming hits ( I created an inhits field )

And I guess I would need to reset the inhits field to 0 at some point...

I got the idea from <http://www.nukedweb.com/phpscripts/phpscriptindex.php> the code is contained in this free application. my thought on how to do it is a counter calculates the hits for sites associated to a link and them more hits the higher the position rating.

the script has a really great feture in that aa a link is added the ad comes in for linking with all the code for a user to place on his site. The ovrerall link engine stinks and has no admin etc. but if the few fetures it does have were added to indexu it would be great...

thanks for the info. I did my first "inhits" link in perl about 2 years ago so I am real familiar with how it all works... I just need to figure out how to get the one piece of PHP code to work...the guts of it! all the rest is window dressing.

Maybe I can work on it Monday....

OK, I have the inhits mod working. well, it is counting hits from an external site to your indexu site . I would have had it the first time thru if I had just used the right ID code to check!!!

now to work on the window dressing.
    • admin link to reset the inhits field to zero (0)
    • a page to show the top sites listing in descending sequence
    • what else ???
I'm tired and going to sleep!!!

    Default tophits

    What else? hmm
    1) perhaps a reminder when the user who placed the link signs in with the id code and a series of gifs for his site to link.

    2) definitely an auto email message monthly
    with something like this:::

Congratulations your index listing xxxxxxxx.com was ranked #15 as your site generated xxx hits to indexu.com, the more hits you bring us the the higher your ranking!! .

Want to get better placement for your listing?

Try putting our link on more pages <click> for some new ideas.

Did you know you can get priority ranking including a logo on our site <click> we have reasonable ad rates for priority listings blah blah..

    What do you think???

hmmmmm.....while I did add the inhits field to the idx_link db, there is nothing that identifies that a user/linkowner has placed a link back on his site (and currently we don't have a INDEXU feature that automatically verifies a link back). The id code itself does not identify the user as having placed a linkback. You could manually update a field with the info that a site has added a linkback.

without a storing the info for a specific user, you could take all users to a reminder page showing them linkback info. Since you don't want them to be transerred to this page more than once as they move about your site, I guess a cookie would needed. I'd have to work on that.

But yes, I think when a user signs in, a reminder might be a good idea.

as for adding an image, that's ok. I'm not sure about "a series of gifs." I think there is an image upload feature for a field. I haven't used it so now would be a good time for me to learn.

I'm not sure how to do "auto" anything except with the server cron. This would certainly be a good feature to have but it may just be in the admin and done manually.

mr esm how are you? please go to <http://www.http://www.scriptmall.com.../cat.php?id=39>
click the add link and fill in garbage..
Then you will see what they have done and what I am after, it will be obvious and you will say aha with glee..

the problem with this script is no admin, no subs, etc, so i have to turf it but am trying to replace with something similar and indexu looks the best. As for image uploads I think its too large a rewrite they way it should be done is imagemaqic with a tiny paid logo upload in the listing, however it can be done in indexu with html.

    hmmm...not sure what I saw.

after adding the info, I clicked the submit button. that just gave me an "Acceptance page" with the linkback info and various banners to choose from

Creating the acceptance page is no problem. I can create the linkback code for the user to copy and paste. you will need to add the various images.
