Please make image to go with link ads an option through admin. Like admin can turn it on, or off. Depending on if admin wants it.

Have an area on left side menu for sponsors. Admin can add sponsors through admin area. Text type links!!

Add a banner rotator to the system. People shouldn't have to add that, as banners and sponsors are major part of having a links site.

Have an advertise page, where people can buy advertising for text ads, or banners. And maybe even for newsletters. Admin can set prices and description prices in admin panel.

Also, add a news section. Like where admin can write news articles and post, or just paste in a news item. All old articles go into an archive for how ever many months admin sets for.
