Default Special Characters and Formatting

Hmmm. I notice that when quotation marks are used in a description (or otherwise), it sets all of the CSS formatting off:

e.g.,
K9HQ Doggy DayCare PLUS

I am using 5.4 - Template BlueSmooth

Any ideas?

In IE yoursite is totally junk, in Opera it works fine (no formatting issues at all) other than the broken link to image_27.doc

Perhaps this is your issue?
<link href="http://dogdirectory.citizencanine.org/themes/canine/styles.css" rel="stylesheet" type="text/css" />
<link rel="stylesheet" type="text/css" href="include/styles.css">

You have two stylesheets listed, either combine them or remove the second one.

As for Quotes, I always strip them from the database when I can.

??? there are no problems with other pages in the site using IE7. add the quotes, and the formatting goes askew. remove the quotes, and it's fine. it has nothing to do with the two stylesheets (though I have removed the second because it serves no purpose).

IE6 is still horribly broken, Opera works fine.

You have some issues with your html which you can verify at W3.org

Playing with a local copy, most of your issues will be solved when you fix the meta tags. Meta tags can't include quotes because they signify the beginning and end of the line.

This also causes issues with "lost" closing tags which aren't really lost.

As I stated earlier, quotes are bad. So are ampersands, you should use &amp; instead.

i didn't catch the fact that the <%$description%> is also the <%$meta_description%>. This is not good! People are bound to use special characters in their business descriptions (I would never have exected this to go directly into the <head>. I have simply used the template being offered -- as you note, and has been noted by others, they are far from valid.

Do you (or anyone else) happen to know where/how the <%$description%> <%$meta_description%> connection can be broken ...

Many thanks.

in detail.html you will find
meta_description="$link_description"

You could easily delete that, the better way to do it would have indexu strip quotes from the description when the ad is posted. I don't know how to do that, but maybe it could be added for the next version.

I didn't see the problem at your website. But if it's about the quotes, then you can use smarty modifier, escape. According to smary manual, you can use:
