Bug when editing a category

I have found that when editing a category, if you accidently, or purposely in my case (I was testing), if you select the same category as your "Parent Category" it allows you to submit the change, then does not display the category.

To re-create this bug here are the steps.

1: Add a category called "Test".

2: Click on "View/Edit/Delete".

3: Click on the little pencil next to "Test" to edit the category information.

4: Leave the "Name" field as is. Select "Test" as the "Parent Category" and submit the form by hitting "Edit Category".

5: Click on "Update Category Path". It will hang (it timed out on my server).

The category is now invisible. You cannot see the category in the user area or the admin. But, it is easily to fix.

6: Click on "Search".

7: Leave the "Category Name" blank and click the "Search" button.

8: You will now see a pencil icon (edit) with no category name next to it. Click on it.

9: Make sure "Parent Category" is NOT "Test" and click "Edit Category"

10: Click "Update Category Path", and it is now fixed.


Clearly this is a bug. The script should not allow you to select the current category as the parent category. Although it is easily fixed by the site administrator, it should be fixed in the core code for the next version of IndexU.

I haven't replicated this to confirm, but I can sort of see it happening. In the normal course of things this would never happen but if one wasn't paying attention it could.

I agree it is not very likely to happen unless you were not paying attention. It might be something that Dody might want to fix in the new version prior to it being released though.

This bug is still in the new version.

Yes, the category structure is broken. To fix this, you need to perform "Check Category Structure" and then manually remove the broken node.

We'll find solution for this in next release / update
