    Default Wimpy cities!

So here I am reading the news, and I see news from Toronto and Chicago whining about how cold it will be there.

Chicago is apparently going to have a wind chill of up to -30F (-34C)
Toronto is apparently going to have a wind chill of up to -20.2F (-29C)

oh no! Save us from the sub tropical climate! The wind chill here last night/this morning, a breezy -58F (-50C)

Well I work at home, but I do go out, even when it's this cold.

In fact I'm going out shortly to virus scan someone's computer for them.

Well it has been cold here too, but I still need to go outside. Tomorrow I have to fix a thermostat in a car, in the cold. Currently it is -9F (-23C) without the windchill. That's just how it is in the North.

    Regards
    Wayne

With due respect, there are two seasons in Winnipeg - winter, and mosquito. Perhaps the attraction is the ballet? We know it's not the Jets.

A bit of trivia: Viking landers found that, measured at 1.5 meters above the surface, the temperature of Mars ranged from + 1° F, ( -17.2° C) to -178° F (-107° C). Bruce, you'd be right at home.

ROFL!!!!!!!!! This could explain a few things

Just out of curiosity... Does it take an hour or two, before going out, to put on about 10 layers of clothes, so you dont freeze to death?!?!?!?

I can only imagine what the heating bills are like there!!

The heating bills depend on your home. Because of the climate swings here we insulate quite well. My highest bill here in the winter will be around $150 or so for the heat alone.

And speaking of the Jets, they sucked when they were here so we sent em down there to see if they'd improve, they didn't.

My house is brand new essentially, it's 3 years old now.

So it's quite well sealed, and well insulated, r24 in the walls, r50+ in the cieling, triple pane windows etc etc. And we make TONS of hydro power here and sell it to a lot of american utilities which keeps our costs down low.

Yes my house is heated with an electric furnace. The price of electricity vs gas here are pretty much identical and the install cost of an electric furnace vs a gas furnace were HUGE. I saved thousands just by putting in the electric furnace.

I know people who are paying 4-600 per month on their heating bills monthly in older houses.

The 4-600 sounds like what I was expecting for tempatures that low!

To me, it wouldn't make sense not to put the money into your house for insulating it. I think a well, VERY well, insulated house and a fireplace would be a MUST!!!

Do you get enough sun light through out the year to make the investment into solar worth it?

Solar is super expensive, it might be worthwhile to do something to lower your bills, but to replace the usage there's no way.

One thing that's getting popular here are geothermal heat pumps. The cost is around $15,000 to build em, but they cost pennies to operate.
