    Default Media Server

This is a bit off topic, but I was just wondering if anyone here has looked into media servers and how you went about it.

Here's what I'm looking to do....

Take all my movies I currently have and dump them to a media server. I'll connect the media server to TV in my living room, but want the ability to watch the contents of the media server is my kids room and also in my bed room. I'd like it to be independent in the kids room and bed room from what is being watched in the living room. Another words, if I'm watching something in the living room, I dont want my kids to turn it on and watch what I'm watching.

Anybody know how I could accomplish this?

To make the output independant I think you'd have to have something like a KVM switch. Note that I said "something like" because I don't know what you really need. It would be easy enough to make it so that every user in the house watches the same thing, but independant output makes it that much more difficult.

Can you expand a little more on this? Lets say I dont care about the requirement of each TV being independent.

I can figure out hardware requirements easily. What O/S and Media Server software do you suggest?

In order for the two other televisions in the house to view it as well, do you know of a way that I can do it over IP? Would I need two boxes for the two other TV's?

I guess my main problem is figuring out what technology to use. After that, I can easily put it all together

I have no idea what you'd need, I said that above.

My statement was simply due to the fact that if you cabled from the computer to every TV in the house and started up a movie, it would show on every connected TV. That's nice and simple enough.

I suppose you could run multiple tv cards, and cable out from there. That's a pain in the butt but it would work.

The best suggestion would probably be to go down to a computer store and talk to them there as I just don't konw the answers you're looking for.
