    Default W3c

    Hi,

Has anyone made their directory to be in complaince with 3WC?
    http://www.w3.org/TR/WAI-WEBCONTENT/

I use Indexu but it was bought to my attention that All pages were found in violation of the the current W3C Web Content Accessibility Guidelines.

My website is now probably unlawful in Britain.
The British Disability Discrimination Act makes it unlawful to discriminate against a disabled person by refusing to provide any service provided to members of the public - including websites.

    Any one have any suggestions?

    Thanks for your help

I have from time to time worked on it.

    see: http://www.linkscoder.com/new_theme_blue2.html

The problem is primarily with displaying the categories. Well, actually there are other problems like browsers not implementing CSS standards properly and the rudimentary control over some CSS code.

IMHO, the biggest offender would not be a small site such as yours but the browsers such as IE, Firefox, Opera, etc. But then I don't live in Great Britain.

But I have never figured out the bruhaha over things like tables. While I do like certain things about DIVs and I don't like having to deal with certain aspects of tables, don't see why we can't use both.

    Oh, well...

The same law exist in the U.S. for any government related site. Little things like using document type declaration or adding Alt tags to category folder image file would be helpful.

Websites can be checked for validation here http://validator.w3.org/

It would be nice if future versions have the ability to ad a alt tag attribute to the category folder image as well as any additionial image fields that are created.

I would also like a w3c forum so we can go in detail. I plan on making my site section 508 compliant (US terminology) over this next year.

It will be really good if this is an issue which get looked at. I am actually building something for a client which happens to be disabled and has asked for this to be in effect. I don't really know how I will manage this but I guess I will have to slowly ask around.

IMHO, about the only sites complying with any standards are the "computer" type websites.

Compliance is also hindered when the browsers themselves ( IE, Firefox, Opera, etc ) all implement the standards differently making it tough to get a standard look for your webpages.

And I have been doing HTML since my first site in 1998 but I'd have to hire a professional to do the CSS coding to account for all the browsers.

    just my 2 cents worth...

Actually working towards compliance is not all that difficult. In the US, they have Section 301 that mandates compliance, in Canada, all government sites adhere to Common Look and Feel which takes parts of the W3C that they feel are most important.

Some things that may interest you: You can still use tables ;-) Just remember that a screen reader reads left to right, up to down...does your site make sense if you read cell by cell like that?

Alt attributes on images - this is something you can get into the habit of doing or at least if you are using software such as Dreamweaver you can get an extension that automatically puts all of your alts to alt="" so that if you don't fill them in, they are still compliant.

    Doc type tag...

Proper use of H1 through H6 - 1 is larger than 6 and should come in that order on the page (some software increases the volume of an H1 over an H2 for example to demonstrate importance)

    No frames...

Use of a noscript tag if you use javascript.

There are some excellent accessiblity forums out there! Would love to see one here! BTW use of proper, current HTML coding will pretty much make one compliant ;-)

I was bored this night so i desided to make fast2web valid xhtml and i'm almost there.

I need only to add one sub category to make the frontpage of fast2web.no
    XHTML 1.0 Transitional valid

I must say it was rather easy

I also added the categories style to css so it will be easier to change appearance.

The reason i have to add sub category is becouse a <p> tag isn't closed and I just have to add a sub category then it will add a </p>.

Really hope I'm right now so it will be fixed

Will finnish things tomorrow now i'm going to bed it's 05:17 in norway now and i haven't slept all night

BTW I started off with over 700 errors

closing of the <p> tag is one of the biggest. Dont worry about the 700 errors, generally fixing one thing will correct 30-40 of the errors as one problem at the start of the page can cause more lower down. Smarty templates should be pretty good already though.
