I began writing a link indexing script in 1999. The reason was simple, I wanted to build a small yahoo like portal focusing on japanese animation. I found one good script that used Perl/CGI, which was the most popular scripting language at that time. Unfortunately they were too expensive for a student like myself, so I decided to write my own portal script.

In the beginning I was using CF 'fusebox' (www.fusebox.org) method. I was using CF because of its benefits over Perl. As I coded more and more I found some complications with the code which made it much more difficult to maintain, so I later decided to write the script using PHP.

The script is known as indexu, the name that I found from nameboy.com. It's from the word index and u, meaning "indexu" is an indexing software and for you the many users. I love the fact that my software has helped many individuals and business reach out to their customers.

On the development side, INDEXU has always been updated every 4-6 months. All new features are taken based on members priority and demand. Indexu has always been developed based on user needs and will always continue to be that way.

Indexu has existed for over 2 years. It has a lot of improvement from the first release. The big improvement in version 2 is its ability to create unlimited user defined database field that handle link/resource data. With this ability users can use indexu to maintain any kind of resource, such as web link, company listing, ebooks, image gallery, student listing, and more.

The next big major release was version 3.x. With this new version, Indexu was no longer just an indexing software anymore, but it had become a web portal/community solution.

Major upgrade in this new version include membership ability, category permission, editors each category, and my favorite list (similar with my wish list). You might of heard about the Open Directory Project (ODP) www.dmoz.org that its content is used by Google, Altavista, Netscape, and other big websites. With indexu you can create your own ODP, with many additional features provided by indexu.

That is, Indexu is always growing up and become mature. Supported by thousands users and hundreds registered users, we seriously improve indexu more and more and make it the best solution. One fact that indexu is good and demanded software is many irresponsible people trying warez and stole indexu code. You can read more about them in our forum.

Okay let's talk the future of indexu. Indexu as portal solution is must. Indexu may not very complete that will have bulletin board or chat. But indexu will provide you how easy to integrate with other popular software. Indexu may have poll, content syndication, and of course improvement of its feature. Improve, improve, and improve its features and performance.

Well ... its already in my head long before. Today the most talked about web technology is xml, one of its implementation is webservice. This technology allow you to offer a service to other website. Let see how Google do this (see http://www.google.com/apis for detail). Google offer 2 webservice: translation and google search result. Google allow you to use their technology. You can do anything as your your imagination. From offering your visitor translation, search the web, and also you can create a desktop application that will translate or search the web.

What is the point? First and the most important is you get popularity. People will use your resource and talk about your website. Other benefit is you can control the syndication of your content better. You can set permission who, where, how they use, and more.

Another issue is improving search algoritm. Most of link indexing softwate today use simple query into database. It will short data by by title, url, description, and other fields. It may enough for today. But as the data grow up bigger and bigger, the need of get accurate data is become crutial. Information retrieval is not enough by doing simple query into database. It will need good page rank algorithm to get accurate data. By implementing page rank algorithm user will get data more accurately.
