So many times I hear from users comments like
- The script doesn't work
- I did what you said but it's still broken
- I deleted .htaccess and it works now
- I get lots of errors and warnings
So why does this happen? It's not IndexU, I'll guarantee that. In fact last week I set up over 100 sites and not one of them had a single error.
So what is the problem? It's the webhost.
So how do you find a decent webhost? You pay for it! So many users see the great deal of 3GB of webspace and unlimited bandwidth for $2.99 per month. This isn't called webhosting, this is called crap.
How can you ensure you get a decent host? Contact them and ask them if IndexU will run on their server. If they don't know then ask if you can have an account for 24 hours to test it. If they won't agree to that then don't use them.
Another thing to remember is that just because it's a big company, that doesn't mean their servers are good. Configuration matters, and if the server isn't configured nicely then it won't work worth a damn. Many companies set their servers so that it's as secure as possible, and that's fine. But that also breaks applications like IndexU as well.
The latest one I found offers all the "features" below for only $8 per month
- 360 GB Web Space
-3600GB Transfer
- Unlimited FTP Accounts
- 1000 MySQL Databases (v4 & v5)
- PHP v4.4.4 & PHP v5.2.1
- Shockwave & Flash
- Microsoft Frontpage Support
etc etc blah blah blah
So what? They still aren't a good provider. First of all, you're never going to use 360GB of web space, and if you do they'll terminiate your account for some made up reason. You will never use 3.6TB of transfer, and if you do they'll terminate your account for some made up reason. How will they do it? They'll say you're using too many resources for a shared account and TOS you.
1000 MySQL databases maybe, but I just had a customer that came up with this error "has exceeded the 'max_questions' resource (current value: 100000)". What's the point of 1000 databases when you can't use them?
This is what I call crap. And 90% of what you find on the internet is crap, maybe higher.
I'd like users to list what hosts they use where they have no issues running IndexU and can install it and run it right out of the box. I'll keep this thread clean so please be on topic.
