Running general directory

I believe most people will use adsense and affiliate link to make money. I used to think the same way, until i realize that they SHOULD be your secondary income generator. So where does the main income come from?

After about 2 months I run indexu.net (general directory), which is not so well maintained unless validating links even without visiting the website to review it. I just remove and reject links with gambling, porn, and dating site. I surprise that now i got 2 premium listings which is not free, $2/year. It may not much, but i can feel the real potential behind this.

Here is, indexu.net has PR0, about 100 unique visit per day. I got about 20-40 new submission per day. Mostly I approved them without reviewing them, just read the title, description, and url, banned porn, gambling, and dating site. According to that stat, if i sell the website, it may be priced less than $50. But still, this website earning money.

I wonder if i will create tens of similar website. How about i spend more time and work to maintain the website. Give a unique design, provide quality link only, promote more to get better PR. Make it full paid directory. Wow ... i can see a lot of money ahead.

Why people will submit to directory? The main reason is to get ONE-WAY LINK BACK to their website. Have you ever tried to get quality reciprocal link? It's hard, very hard to get one, unless you have popular website. So by submitting to directory, it's easier to get link back, also, no need to put link back to the directory.

Why people submit their website to PR0 directory? What do they expect from them? I believe the answer is that they expect the directory will gain better PR in next few months, so that it's a long term time investment. Most directory owner will promote their directory from time to time. When it gain high PR, the directory could be switched to be paid directory. Having their website listed there before it become a paid directory is a good move.

I hope this short article will give a brief information about the potential of general web directory. I'm planning to make another general directory, will make it a full paid directory and will spend a few dollars to promote it. I will share the result here.

Indexu offers some advantages over some of the other backends I've used over the years, but whether people will be willing to pay for links is not easy to say.
On some of the sites I run I've had a few premium / sponsored links, but the bulk of the income comes from adsense and other affiliate links. There is also a certain amount of banner space you can sell
To be honest I don't think general directories will hack it.
If you have a highly specialised directory dealing with a niche of some kind, then you stand a much higher chance of success, though you'll also have to work harder

About niche market, i have no any reference to show you. I know one, but the owner doesn't allow me to tell you all that he use indexu and he does not want his website revealed here, that's too bad

the big issue is traffic. no doubt a significant amount of indexu.net's traffic has something to do with its connection to nicecoder and the indexu products -- which can be found in the major script repositories and so on. buying a brand new domain, and setting up a generic listings directory will net 0 traffic. however, using a directory in consort with traffic generated around some other focus (product/service) as doddy has done, clearly makes sense, and can be an alternate source of revenue.

in my opinion, the only other way to capture traffic is to focus the site around something specific (special interest, product, geography, etc.) as has been discussed. however, even highly focused sites now need to be well optimized to have any hope at competitive rankings and generating traffic. thankfully, indexu has become very search engine friendly - category head control for metacontent, search engine friendly links, rss feeds that can be used to generate relevant body content, etc.

the moral of the story, if there is one: though an important tool, directories don't fall out of the box to make you money.

on Indexu engine I run Slovak general directory Vsevedko (in english it means "jack of all trades , and I make money on slovak PPC system. Not very much, but they helps (say about 3 - 4 USD/day).

Number of visits during a day is about 1500 (pageviews about 4000).

It is a shame, that I cannot use sponsored listings, because Paypal is not resident in Slovakia. But I think when PayPal will come here, I will earn more money.

now I have prepared a price list for graphic banner advertisement, but no succes for the moment.

1) Adsense can be a great source of income, I did make up to $500.00/month until my site was ban from Google (firearms related)
2) People will pay for links, Icurrently use Text Link Adds (yes I will get a commission if you register) I make $60/70 per month for the links ($10.00 per month per link) and $25.00 per month for their affiliate program. My site use Indexu 3.2 so I cannot sell the premium links myself but if you use Indexu 5.xxx you can.
