Anyone have any suggestion or comments about how to encourage visitors to write reviews?

I'd like to hear any feedback.

Hart_house, you may try what amazon.com has done.
They encourage by add a simple words like "Be the first one who review this product"
In indexu you can do this by editing "Write a Review!"

Another good idea is to have the "write a review" in the details page. I find this is good in generating increase written reviews.

what are reward points? and how do people in general give out reward points to others who write reviews?

Are reward points higher bid placements?

It is always "Out of Sight, Out of Mind".

From my point of view, "Review" has many reasons and benefits and ways to make people write them.

    1) More review can mean more traffic to site.
    2) While moderating review can be tough (admin can view the IP that was used to write review... this might be little helpful)

About encouraging people to write review

    1) At Need Scripts, I am working on little different reivew link, where is actually has an image and is easy to catch end users attention.

    2) Once also encourage users to write reviews by offering free stuff:: for example, (a) Of every 100 review, one users will win xyz ..... or (b) Every month one reviewer would win something. Prices should be normally decided based on target audience.

    3) Other way to promote end users to write review would be to make them read review. If they read more review, they are more likely to write them too. So it would be wonderful, it there was an option where top x rated reviews and/or latest x reviews would appear on home page. Also, a seperate page for reviews something like http://www.needscripts.com/cgi/review.cgi?ID=1103 would also be great.

    Very important

But from my point of view, there is one feature that would be really great.

    1) Listing owner and reviewer notification on review approval.

So lets say if John Doe owns www.johndoe.com and has a listing at www.needscripts.com and suppose Bill Gate$ visits Need Scripts and writes a review about www.johndoe.com, then it would be great, if John Doe also receives an email once the review is approved by admin.

However, if this feature is added, it is also required to add an option while adding listing/s that listing owner can select if they would like to recieve email regarding review of their listings - this would be required to protect them from receiving tons of emails.

Oh sorry if I mis guided you.

I am a big fan of IndexU but at Need Scritps, we are not using IndexU. As one of the main feature we wanted for our directory was static pages and IndexU does not support it yet and next we have about 1250 categories and it would be a nightmare to handle those categories using IndexU. But it seems like IndexU might be adding some real good features in near future.
