    Default SUCCESS and MONETIZATION

    Hello all,
I have a series of questions...please address if you have any input.

How profitable is the directory business ... I am sure this is a variable but assuming you have a good niche; how profitable could it be.

How much success has anyone seen.

    Thanks

Forget general directories unless you can throw thousands worth of marketing at it... i have 2 general sites that "tick over" but ar by no means huge money makers. all my niche sites together can make xxx a day on adsense, plus if i do newsletters, offers and sponsorship deals i usually get 10ish upgrades each mailing. Its take 3 years of hard work though, its a really really bad pay off if you look at it like that - however, i can stop promoting and developing my sites today, and im still going to make money... thats the beauty of it, once you get them developed the money keeps coming.

It is hard work though, it really isnt a get rich quick scheme - and you either have to pay to get it as you want it, or you need to learn indexU quite well.

Good luck with it, and really work out your target niche first

Your question is common, but no one can answer it the same. The only answer I'll give you is to say that the output (income) totally depends on the level of input (time, marketing etc).

well, I still stand by my final review of almost 2 years ago.

Can link directories be profitable...??? Yes, but very, very few every make any money let alone lots of money.

Should you start one...? sure, go for it. You may not make any money but you could have lots of fun.

    Default Thanks So Far

Encouraging...I don't fear hard work and I believe I will make it. Need to know how the DMOZ extractor really works.

If I extract data from DMOZ which is allowed it will populate but the number of users will not reflect that volume of submission. That's why I am considering not showing the who's online and # of users block.

Secondly how possible will it be to change the rss feed from yahoo to something relevant to your chosen niche. I tried but the block just did not show up.

Please address if you have any input.

    Thanks

Changing the RSS feed is simplistic and takes only the URL of the new feed to make it work. If it didn't work you probably didn't use a valid feed URL.

Most of my directories have the number of members and mailing list subscriber counts removed. It's really no ones business.

I will check the url of the feed I want to add...yeah its really no one's business how many members you have. So I guess I can remove that block then...thanks

No need to remove the block, just edit it to remove the lines you don't want. You want want to advertise how many categories and links you have still.

Good feedback...thanks I appreciate it. I do strongly believe it would have been a tough sell to populate your niche as a startup directory. However with the DMOZ extractor all that time and money ir redeemed. I have not purchased the extractor yet but I feel like using it will make a world of difference. With existing listings in place new users will have no problems listing their site as well. Let me know what you think about this.

Hmm... well in my opinion a niche directory needs to have piles of customization, and lots of niche-specific custom fields. The dmoz extractor willg ive you a good list of urls to work with, but i think you would need to visit each of those urls and get more information to make a niche directory sucessful. Otherwise, you just have a "niche general directory"
