my problem is the amount of links i want to use.
would it be possible without performance drops to use indexu/ indexu4 with around 2000 cathegories and 300000-500000 links?

Take a look at the Statistics section on the left side at http://www.indexuhelp.com/indexu32e/index.php
This is the enhanced version of INDEXU v3.2 and it is running over 5,000 categories and over 122,000 links.
Can it hanlde up to 500,000 links? I don't know. But I suspect it could. the big problem with links programs has been the number and level/depth of categories not the number of links.

Ive currently got 6000 categories and it seams to function fine. Where you will find problems is in the loading times of pages which drop down menus generated from the categories, such as the Listing and Modify pages.Originally Posted by esm

are you using v3.1 or v3.2?
As I recall you were using v3.1 and that version can time out when doing some things that are category intensive.
v3.2/v3.2E does a much better job of generating category info.

yeh.... 3.1
Never really had any problems with timeouts, just when you have that many cats... and when they have to load the 3 drop down menus... it can take awhile
