    Question Johnny Doomo's Presale Questions...

    1. When will INDEXU v3.2E be released? Is a new version of INDEXU set

    to be released shortly?

    2. Does INDEXU v3.2 or INDEXU v3.2E work with VB 2.0.x

    3. I was reading something about "Extreme DMOZ Extractor" being able to

only do a limited amount of categories. Can you tell me more about

this? Can you explain to me how I would use "Extreme DMOZ Extractor" if

I purchased it? Is it that difficult to choose which categories I want

and to import them into my database?

    4. I take it INDEXU v3.2 and or INDEXU v3.2E are spider friendly and

will be indexed by Google and other search engines?

    5. What is the "Google Web API" and what does it do?

Shortly. I will let aladdin do some testing before I release it.

Is a new version of INDEXU set to be released shortly?
That will require an answer from dody.

    2. Does INDEXU v3.2 or INDEXU v3.2E work with VB 2.0.x
    ?????

    3. I was reading something about "Extreme DMOZ Extractor" being able to only do a limited amount of categories. Can you tell me more about this? Like anything new, once I became familiar with it the extractor was very easy to use. Limited? Yep, like any program that does that kind of stuff it will be limited by the horsepower of your computer/internet connection. If you want to do a million at one time, forget it unless you have one of those power computers costing $10,000. Even then, programs of this type may not handle that size of file.

Want to do 10,000. No problem (well, unless your computer is 5 years old with 128mb of ram and running windows 98).

But the program is easy to use after a 10 minute familiarization time.

Take a look at http://www.nicecoder.com/community/s...ead.php?t=1769. And look at the last post. From me on 7-25. and if you read the entire post, ignore posts from Frank. He is such a clutz.

    4. I take it INDEXU v3.2 and or INDEXU v3.2E are spider friendly and will be indexed by Google and other search engines?
That is what they tell me

    5. What is the "Google Web API" and what does it do?
you can read about it here http://www.google.com/apis/

    1. How exactly are the "Latest New Additions and Updates" gotten? Are these simply sites that people have manually added? Is there a way to set it to recheck the dmoz and show the new entries in here? (without hacking)

    2. With the "Extreme DMOZ Extractor" you can pick a category here and a category there correct? So later on if I find more cats that I want to add into my database, I can simply add them to my database without overwriting or messing up my other categories?

    3. What exactly does the "Become an Editor" button do? I can't seem to get it to work properly in the demo even when I'm inside a categorry.

    4. Are the instructions that come with the "Extreme DMOZ Extractor" very detailed so that if I have trouble I can understand the manual and/or come here and get support?

    5. How much space and time is required to pull parts of dmoz? Dmoz.org claims over 4 million sites, and over 590,000 categories. How much space and time would you estimate would be needed if I was interested in pull around 1 million sites and/or 125,000 to 250,000 categories?

    6. Can you explain a little bit on how the process is done? How do I pick the categories that I want to pull over and import into mine? Do I have to download that whole 1-2GB file?

    7. Is it possible to set web links to be added automatically without being put into a queue the admin checks? Can I set this feature so that it's category specific so some are queued and others aren't?

    8. I see there is a newsletter section on the demo. Is this newsletter automatically generated or is it simply used to gather emails and you have to manually design what you want in the email? Can I set the email to auto send on certain dates and/or include the top 10, latest 25 links?

    9. If I don't have a compatible forum, does IndexU have it's own registration system or is a compatible forum required in order to have registration through IndexU? What type of control do I have over users if I use the internal IndexU registration system? (user names, bans, links posted, ip addresses, user deletion, usergroups, etc.)

    10. Is it possible to have custom fields for more input when a user is submitting a website?

    11. Is there a moderators control panel so that an admin can assign a team to help with link and review queues without giving the moderators full access to the admin CP?

    Thanks.

johnny, when you're using indexu, you can use your own data or using dmoz data. Please understand that indexu do not grap dmoz live data
Dmoz.org has very large database (over 4,8million web links) that is indexu unable to hold such huge database. Indexu idealy can hold below 100,000 weblinks and 1500 categories.

We develop Extreme Dmoz Extractor to help indexu users getting their database very quickly. While indexu is not design to handle large database you should use partial data of dmoz.org. Even Extreme Dmoz Extractor can extract all dmoz database, we'd suggest indexu user to keep their database under the limit. Ok, please visit http://www.nicecoder.com/dmoz_extractor.php for more detail.

Back to your question, "Latest New Additions and Updates" is calculated within indexu database. It's have no relation with dmoz.org.

these are automatically determined by INDEXU based on the date the link was added/update and the number of days selected by you in the admin control panel (acp) for a new/updated link to show as a new/updated link

    2. With the "Extreme DMOZ Extractor" you can pick a category here and a category there correct? So later on if I find more cats that I want to add into my database, I can simply add them to my database without overwriting or messing up my other categories?
as for your questions on the DMOZ extractor, I suggest you download the demo and give it a try. the demo is the exact same program as the live one, you just need the registration key to override the demo features.

    3. What exactly does the "Become an Editor" button do? I can't seem to get it to work properly in the demo even when I'm inside a categorry.
allows another person besides the admin to approve, edit, delete links.

    4. Are the instructions that come with the "Extreme DMOZ Extractor" very detailed so that if I have trouble I can understand the manual and/or come here and get support?
Nope. there are just a few paragraphs of instruction and they cover its use fairly completely. It is not a complicated program.

    5. How much space and time is required to pull parts of dmoz? Dmoz.org claims over 4 million sites, and over 590,000 categories. How much space and time would you estimate would be needed if I was interested in pull around 1 million sites and/or 125,000 to 250,000 categories?
You want to create a site that is half the size of DMOZ???? and run it with a $99 program?????

Get a big computer and buy a webhosting site to house your site.

    6. Can you explain a little bit on how the process is done? How do I pick the categories that I want to pull over and import into mine? Do I have to download that whole 1-2GB file?
yep, you have to download the whole file. If you are not sure what categories you want, I'm not sure I can tell you what to chose. I suspect most successful links sites are those that are focus on a specific area - Hawaiian golf, guns, php programing, etc

    7. Is it possible to set web links to be added automatically without being put into a queue the admin checks? Can I set this feature so that it's category specific so some are queued and others aren't?
You can automatically have new links added. No one will recommend that you do that. I certainly never would unless I had a special situation (like maybe a membership site where I could trust those adding links)

    8. I see there is a newsletter section on the demo. Is this newsletter automatically generated or is it simply used to gather emails and you have to manually design what you want in the email? Can I set the email to auto send on certain dates and/or include the top 10, latest 25 links?
the feature you describe is where folks can opt into your mailing list. You create the newsletter and email it to the folks on the list.

    9. If I don't have a compatible forum, does IndexU have it's own registration system or is a compatible forum required in order to have registration through IndexU? What type of control do I have over users if I use the internal IndexU registration system? (user names, bans, links posted, ip addresses, user deletion, usergroups, etc.)
INDEXU does not have nor does it use a forum in any way. I am not aware of any controls except you can add/edit/delete thru the acp. Unlike v3.2E the current version of INDEXU does not create a relationship between users and linkowners.

    10. Is it possible to have custom fields for more input when a user is submitting a website?
    yes

    11. Is there a moderators control panel so that an admin can assign a team to help with link and review queues without giving the moderators full access to the admin CP?
the Become a Editor feature #3 above

RE 2: I read in one of the threads that the demo is an outdated version that lacks features and/or security. So I wasn't really set on installing it, just to remove it if I decided on purchasing it. How out of date are we talking about?

RE 5: Are you saying that having IndexU running a site with 250,000=+ categories wont work or that it would be more of a limit of the "Extreme DMOZ Extractor"? If I didn't extract that many categories, but had a site that grew to that type of size, would I start to see problems? Have you conducted any tests on this? What's the maximum sites/categories that you have tested and is stable? Have you actually seen an IndexU become unstable/problematic because of too many or are you just "covering your ass" so to speak, but that it could work?

NOTE: I currently run dedicated a 2.8 GHz, 80 GB Hard Drive, 1 GB Mem, 300 GB bandwidth box.

RE 6: I could pick out each category that I want, but I guess a more specific way of asking the question is, Can I pick multiple directory paths. For example if I wanted pull the entire contents of the following directories:

    Games: Video Games: Shooter
    Games: Developers and Publishers
    Games: Game Studies
    Games: Resources
    Games: Video Games: Computer Platforms
Games: Video Games: Shooter: Cheats and Hints
Games: Video Games: Shooter: News and Reviews
    Computers: Emulators
    Computers: Hardware: Systems
    Computers: Hardware: Historical
Computers: Hardware: Technical Support and Services
    Computers: Security
    Computers: Hacking
    Computers: Software: Operating Systems
    Arts: Movies: Genres

Would pulling those directories likely be possible with dmoz extractor and would it require downloading the entire file if I knew what directories I already wanted?

New Question 1: Do you think in the future IndexU will be updated to hold more directories and sites? So that at a future time I may be able to update an older version with one that can hold more, or is this unlikely for the future of IndexU?

New Question 2: Is the Dmoz.org extractor designed specifically for IndexU or can it be used with another indexing service?

    Thanks.

I am not aware of the Extractor being out of date.

The limitations are not so much with the software but with the hardware. Theortically, INDEXU can handle an unlimited number of categories, links, etc. But throw a million of anything at it and it will just take time for the software to process it and the hardward to transport. I have read that some INDEXU sites have over 25,000 categories but have seen no definitive studies on the upper limits of its capabilities.

Creating a site half the size of DMOZ is an ambitious project. I am not sure that I would try to run it with software that costs from $100 to $1,000.

I know of two sites running v3.1 that cannot handle a large number of categories

search for faithfound.com for the stats and see:http://faithfound.com/hot.php but other parts do work.
also running 3.1 is my old INDEXU site http://www.indexuhelp.com/indexu and it does not work and it has over 5,000 categories and 122,000 links.

But v3.2 at http://www.indexuhelp.com/indexu32e ( and my LinksCoder site at http://www.indexuhelp.com/link_coder ) both run the same database and work just fine.

the extaction requires the dmoz file to be downloaded to your computer whether you want 10 links or a million links. ditto for the categories.

you may want to read http://www.nicecoder.com/dmoz_extractor.php

once again I suggest you download the demo and try it to see if it will do what you want.

as I recall, the extractor creates standard tab delimited files

my understanding is that v4 will be a complete re-write. and don't expect it before next year.

hope this helped with your decision

I heard that the demo version of IndexU was out of date (not the extractor). So it doesn't have the features as the full version. Is this true and if so can you or somebody give me an idea of what is missing? There is no test version of the extractor to work with the test version of IndexU is there?
