Default I am back with some questions

Been a while and either Indexu has moved along well or I know a bit more. I came looking for something to build a regional business directory but I may do more If it keeps looking good.

    Questions:
    1. When adding custom fields (been playing with a V5.4.0 install) The changes aren't reflected in listing or detail pages. Template mods required?

    2. Is changing the default fields (order, delete or change text) required a template modification?

    3. Screen shots; both large or small. Plugins or part of the core?

    4. Use G maps instead of Y maps; easy or...?

    5. I have seen a site or 2 with a listing claim feature. Plugin or...?

    6. I see custom pricing per category. What about different fields per category?

    7. What about static pages for privacy, about etc.?

I am seriously considering a single or 10 license purchase with the copyright removal and maybe banner plugin depending on answers to my questions. Any coupons available right now. I remember getting an email not long ago but must have got deleted.

    Template / plugin questions:

    8. Are plugin and/or template purchases for single domain (indexutemplates.com) per domain? Specifically for regional business directory the mobi template would be a good selling point.

If answers to these questions can be found here pardon me please. Have spent near 10 hours today reading and looking at sites + evaluating the V5 functionality and am about fried. I hope something hasn't been forgotten.

    P.S.
Any free templates other than that ugly orange thing?

    1) Yes and no. If you have <%$custom_form_field%> in the add_form.html modify_form.html and detail_link.html then you don't need to modify the template. If you do NOT have <%$custom_form_field%> then you either can add it, or you need to add the fields manually by calling the field. If the field name is yourname then you would use <%$yourname%>

    2) No

    3) Neither. It's very difficult to make a screenshot from a linux server (nearly impossible). Although you can use a service like thumbshots.org

    4) Same pile, different contents. Read that as easy

    5) Listing claim feature is built in

    6) Yes you can, but that would work on IF statements that you would add to detail_link.html or browse.html and is done manually

    7) Static pages are a click away

    8) Not per domain from indexutemplates. Indexutemplates templates can be used on any number of IndexU sites that have licenses owned by yourself as long as you have a membership.

PS) Five of them, available in the client area

Forget v5, Deluxe spanks it's butt. Plus v5 won't be supported after May 1 2009.

Coupons? There are none, but if you're looking at 10 licenses (and extra's) I'm sure I can cut you a deal

Not bad answers except the templates. If I click to add the mobi template It seems to go to the cart ok without asking about a membership.

BTW, the Facing template demo breaks in my FF3 when moving from entry page.

Are the new templates cleaner than the V5 default? I am finally getting to be able to make changes to smarty templates and now a whole new system to hack away at.

I am leaning toward a 10 package with the copyright removal, the mobi and 1 or 2 other templates. It just makes sense if one has 3 sites and it looks like it can be more than a directory. Maybe the banner plugin but it isn't to bad to insert adsense most places.

Thanks for response. Need to do some more digging, looking and reading. I want to do this project right from the start.

Oh yes, mobile devices get auto detected for when to use the mobi template or...

Time to call it a day.

Mobile devices do not get detected with the mobi template, it is simply a straightforward template.

Not sure what issues you're seeing with the Facing template. I've checked a number of pages and do not see issues.

All of the templates have been undergoing a change to make them xhtml compliant. This hasn't been completed yet but it will be. I assume that's what you mean when you say "cleaner".

If I click to add the mobi template It seems to go to the cart ok without asking about a membership.
I'm a little confused on this one. At what site is this happening at because there is no cart on indexutemplates. It's simply a membership based system.

The Facing is rendering good now.

I may need to pick up the .mobi domain and figure out something. Run same database from a subdomain where only diff is the template possible? Or figure out a template select thing.

At Quality Web Based Softwares for Your Business - Link Directory - Helpdesk - Live Chat - DMOZ Extractor I scroll down to the mobi template, click 'add to cart' shows (see http://nwminfo.com/noname.jpg) and if I click checkout it proceeds to the what appears proper checkout page.

By cleaner I meant the source which looks strange to me. May be because is first time I have looked at it. I have figured out how to tweak Drupal, Wordpress, Aardvark and... themes. I can figure these out but am getting old and brain cells occasionally go on strike. I can bang away with PHP but database/SQL is a problem.

Dreamweaver is a very close friend

Sorry, My example shows facing but same difference.

Unfortunately that is the way phpaudit works. I don't like it, but for the moment there isn't any competing product that is as good.

The source may be strange, but it works Seriously though, it's a mix of xhtml and smarty. Anything you see between <> is typically smarty. Of course there is also the PHP side to contend with as well, but 99.9% of users never need to touch the PHP code.

Thanks. It is just a question of 'bang for the buck' and available funds. I will be buying something within a week (credit card billing cycle thing).

Trying to come up with a mobile device solution. Without going into details it may be the thing that dictates success or failure of the regional directory project.

Woops, anywhere to find info on writing myself a thing to take a dump from XYZ package and create a csv file for Indexu. One is a no longer supported script directory of close to 5,000 links. The others are very small niche directories.

If you look on NiceCoder's blog, there is a free utility that the programmers made to convert other directory links and cats into IndexU. I've used it before and it works well

Thanks, will look. Problem is the package is obscure and apparently no longer supported (SkaLinks) which is a shame.

I can convert any database aas long as the category and link tables are seperate. If you want me to look and give you a quote send me a sample of about 10 lines of data including the header data.

I'd also need to know how large the database is in total as well (uncompressed).

Will file that. I downloaded the tool to look at it.

Question box I am. Any way to limit length of title and description input?

Inside IndexU? Yes there is. You can use <%$description|truncate:xx%> where xx are how many characters you want to make the limit.

If you want to limit at the form imput, you'd just use javascript to limit the number of characters to be input.

I downloaded the 7 day preview to check some things. I don't know enough javescript to do that but I see that activating the counter plugin does what I want.

Is it difficult to replicate that functionality for like title and possible some custom fields?

I am liking things except the orange theme gives me a headache.

    ROFL!!! Join the club!

There are a bunch of other free themes, but my suggestion would be to take a look at IndexUTemplates.com. There are excellent templates on there. You can either purchase a one time theme or become a member of the site and then you'll have access to all of them including the plugins too One to Two new templates are created each month

There's nothing to know really, as I had given you the answer on exactly how to do it. You would replace the <%$description%> with the code I posted.

Also as a note, that is smarty code, which is yet another different language.
