core.8623 files added to my site??

have I been hacked. I noticed that I am out of disk space . I get inot my site and i see that these core files have been added to my sites the last few days.
have i been hacked? where did these files come from.

can i delete them and not cause any problems?

Where are they located?
What size are they *sounds big if they have made you run out of space*
Have you looked inside them to see what the content is?

core.xxxx files are core dump files which can be safely removed (linux ? if linux what kind of linux - ask your hosting provider)

it is created when application is terminated unexpectedly - I suspect it is because of apache crashed.
